Head Teacher’s Update 2/02/2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

Assembly

We had a very important visitor to our assembly today. Jamie Andrews is an experienced climber who had an unfortunate incident some time ago.  He talked about overcoming his challenges, raising thousands for charity and to promote ‘Get Active’ and health and well-being as the Ambassador for Bruntsfield for the Junior Duke Awards.  It was a very interesting morning.

Uniform

Almost all children are wearing school colours (blue sweatshirt) and looking very smart.  Unfortunately, some children are consistently coming to school wearing casual clothing every day.  Please make the effort to wear the school colours and show we represent the Bruntsfield Family.  We have said PE kit can be worn under the school colours.  Only on PE days can children wear the football hoodie. We have lots of spares, so please get in touch via our discreet e-mail if you would like assistance or support family@bruntsfield.edin.sch.uk

Languages Week

We have had an excellent 5 days celebrating global languages.  Each class were involved in a series of fun, global language based activities in school and in the community.  Thanks to our parents and English as an Additional Language partners for supporting us and working with our learners.  Special thanks to Mrs Bell who organised and planned the event.

Call for Chess Players!

BPS will be participating in the Scotland Schools Chess Championship on 24 February in Glasgow. We have a team of 4 experienced players, but we are also allowed 1 reserve. If your child is a keen chess player, and has some tournament experience, could you please be in touch with Maks Del Mar, one of the player’s dads who is organising the team, to express an interest in being the reserve player: delmar.max@gmail.com.

Badminton

A team of four P6 boys took part in the Lothian Schools Badminton Championships, in Penicuik on Sunday 28th January.  Jude C, Hector G, Matthew K and Gregor M all competed in the U13 boys singles and doubles competition.

They all played very well in a category that included P7s from schools across Edinburgh and the Lothians. All the boys took part with a very positive attitude. Particular mention to Jude who won the Boys B singles final, and to Jude & Hector who won the Boys B doubles final.

Thanks to their badminton coach Mike, who came along to support and encourage them. It was a great day.

School Crossing

We have a  School Crossing Patrol Guide vacancy which can be found on the myjobscotland website (www.myjobscotland.gov.uk) .  It is important we fill these positions to keep our families safe in our community.  The closing date for the vacancies is the 8th of February and the post reference number on my job Scotland is EDN26702.

Get your boots on and join us for our February Play the Game Course, supported by the Scottish FA, at Tynecastle Park & Queensferry Hub.

Tynecastle -Monday 12th – Friday 16th February 2024. 10am-12pm daily. Tynecastle February Play the Game 2024

Queensferry Hub -Monday 12th – Friday 16th February 2024. 2pm-4pm daily. Queensferry Hub Play the Game 2024

This course is ideal for kids between 5-12 years of age who like to play outfield whether as a defender, midfielder, striker or all three! Games, goals, defending and attacking – it’s all here!  Sessions are suitable for young players of all abilities including those just starting out in the game and those who already play regular football. We acknowledge that kids are also on holiday while attending these sessions, so we endeavour to create a balance between coaching and allowing players to experience exciting and fun games-based activities and challenges that add to their time off school.

Kind regards,

Stephen Gilhooley
