School Improvement 2026-2027
Following our evaluations from last session, we have identified two overarching themes this session in our Improvement Plan for 2026-2027.
Continue to improve learning and teaching to ensure consistency, quality of experience and improve outcomes for all learners.
Our outcomes:
Staff become skilled in the Edinburgh Pupil Tracking Online Tool to analyse data confidently.
Staff can use data and evidence to evaluate learning and teaching more accurately and identify next steps in learning.
Continue to embed our new writing programme, ‘The Write Stuff’. Plan well and celebrate success with our learners.
Learners experience greater consistency in expectations, support, challenge, feedback and opportunities to lead and share learning.
Children and Young People take responsibility for their own learning and progress. Improve skills to lead learning and others.
Outcomes:
Pupils have increased opportunities to discuss progress with their teacher.
Reflective learning walks with Pupil Council and feedback shared.
Learner Conversations with Senior Leadership Team at different times of the year.
Pupils consulted and involved in playground plans.
Pupils regularly involved in IDL, planning and next steps in learning.
Rights Respecters continue to promote awareness of Global Goals and all issues relating to democracy, citizenship and critical/independent thinking.

Please pop this date in your calendars as final submission date! More information on this to come.
Parent Forum meeting – you’re invited!
All parents, carers and school staff are warmly invited to the first Parent Forum meeting of the new school year.
NYCOS
The NYCOS choir starts back this week and there are opportunities for all children to join.
NYCOS connects with schools and young people locally, and are keen to keep building those relationships — both by welcoming more young singers into the choir and by finding opportunities to work with schools in the future.
NYCOS is a great complement to school learning, with proven benefits in literacy and numeracy. The musicianship programme develops aural skills, musical understanding and confidence — valuable skills that young people can take into everything else they do in school.
Our new Clerical Assistant – Mrs Katie Neil has started in our Office. Katie comes from St Joseph’s in Broomhouse with a good range of experience.
In addition, we are delighted to welcome Miss Katie Brennan to Bruntsfield as our new Pupil Support Officer. Katie has a background in psychology and education. She will be starting her new role in a few weeks.

Sporting Achievements
On Wednesday 13th May a combined P6/P7 Bruntsfield football team took part in the second round of the Inspectors Cup at Meggetland playing fields.
Cheered on by parents and Mr Gilhooley, the boys put in an incredible performance in the driving rain against extremely tough opposition. They ended up winning one match, drawing another and narrowly losing the other two. Unfortunately their journey ends at this stage of the competition. Well done to the whole team for setting such high standards and never giving up. They can all be proud of how they represented the school and themselves. Well done Josh V (P6A), Joshua H, Elliott S (P6C), Oscar L, Max L, Luca P (P7A), Jack R (P7B), Jack C, Ralphie D and Max W (P7D).
On Thursday 14th May, in pretty miserable weather, Bruntsfield P6 and P7 Girls played in the first round of the EPSSA cup. They were in a really rough group with Sciennes Cup Winners TNP, Pentland, Bonaly and Blackhall. Bruntsfield competed well and finished second and successfully progress to the next round which is on May 28th. Well done girls!
Our school was participating in the Interscholastic Sports competition on Monday. We competed in the 80m , 600m, cricket throw, long jump and boys, girls and mixed relays. We did extremely well in all areas getting into the majority of the finals. Our P7 girls came over all 3rd in the girl’s relay and got bronze medals and our boys P7 team got pipped at the post for a 4th place. Tilly (P7D) came 4th in her final for the 80m and Oscar (P7A) came in 4th in the 600m. All the children did well and should be proud of their achievements as we are as a school. Well done !

Seasons for Growth Parent & Carer Programme

The course aims to help parents and carers better understand the experience of death, bereavement, separation and divorce from a child’s perspective. The programme focuses on how to communicate with their child using the Seasons for Growth approach, while looking after themselves.
Parents and carers looking to support their children through change and loss will.
Learn about how children respond to change, loss and grief.
Understand that it is normal to have a range of grief reactions.
Explore new approaches to change, loss and grief in the lives of their children.
Build communication, decision making and problem-solving skills.
Participate in a supportive network of adults.
Integrate their new learning into their family relationships.
Courses will run for two hours, over three weeks. This is a new course we are piloting, and we aim to run a small number of community-based courses each term, alongside colleagues who have trained and are delivering within school and learning community settings.
Grief and loss are common themes that come through for parents and carers; we hope that the course can go some way to help parents and carers feel a little more equipped.
