Dear Parents/Carers,
Annual Awards Ceremony
After a long and emotional awards ceremony, I can now reveal that Nubia (P7) won the Golden Book award for doing things above and beyond and inspiring others. Petra (P7) and Albert (P7) won the Golden Boot award from Mrs Ramsay. Leamington (Blue) won the House Trophy. Many other certificates and medals were awarded including Junior Duke and our school certificates. Thanks to our community partner Harvest and Green for awarding prizes to the winners of their writing competition. Well done to everyone! If you didn’t win, be inspired!
Head Lice
We have another outbreak of Head Lice in the school. Please check your child’s head regularly. Only treat the head appropriately if you witness the eggs or the lice. Further advice can be found here: https://www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/skin-hair-and-nails/head-lice-and-nits/
Bruntsfield Celebration of Music Concert
On Wednesday evening, we had an amazing celebration of musical talent in Bruntsfield. What a show! Singing, instrumentals and groups. The full house had a great night.
This event was planned to ensure the future of choir and singing tuition in Bruntsfield and across stages. We raised over £600. Many thanks to Rocio and her team for organising and to all our performers.
Transition Monday
This Monday afternoon (24th) will be our official transition afternoon when the children will meet their new teacher, get to know them and have some fun. I’m sure you’ll hear lots of stories when they return home!
Safer Routes to School
I have been in touch with our Safer Routes to School Team to share parent anxiety around the crossing at Merchiston Place.
To keep you up to date, this is the response I received:
Mark Fai the SCPG who operates the Montpelier Park / Merchiston Place crossing and who is currently back home in Hong Kong on special leave until the end of the school term has moved house and now resides in the Craigmount area of the City. Prior to departing he formally asked for a transfer to a crossing point nearer to his home which we can now accommodate.
As such the lady who started at Merchiston Avenue / Granville Terrace ( Hillary Dixon -who resides at Holy Corner ) will be transferred to cover this point with effect from Thursday 20th June 2024, her point will be vacant meantime and we will try and recruit to replace her over the school summer holidays.
Your feedback will be taken into account prior to any replacement for Hillary being appointed.
Water Safety during the Summer
“Around 140 people lose their lives at the UK and Irish coasts each year, and over half never even planned to enter the water. It’s important you know what to do in an emergency so you can help without putting yourself in danger.” (RNLI)
These are some simple skills you should know that could save a life:
§ If you find yourself in difficulty in the water, float to increase your chances of survival.
§ If you see someone else in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard at the coast or the Fire Service if inland for example at a Loch or river.
Please see attached some short videos on water, river/canal, and coastal safety. The ‘float to live’ ‘make the right call’ and ‘every second counts’ videos do capture the attention/imagination. The ‘coast clever’ and ‘canal careful’ videos are slightly longer and potentially good for a class to watch. More water safety information including literature in different languages can be found at WSS Water Safety Code & Language translations (watersafetyscotland.org.uk)

Last Day of term
Next Friday (28th June) is our last day of the 2023/24 session. We will have a special farewell assembly in the morning. At 11.55am, the P7s will be piped out of the school by our bagpipe players. Please leave enough room at the Main Entrance for them to leave safely. The rest of the school will be dismissed at 12.05pm.
We start back on Wednesday 14th August at the usual times.
Kind regards,
Stephen Gilhooley
