Head Teacher’s Update 15/09/2023

Dear Parents/Carers,

Assembly

The children were discussing the Right of the Month in Assembly on Friday morning.  The focus is on Article 28 – The Right to an Education and the Global Goal – a Right to a Quality Education.  Here’s the supporting video you can view as a family: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XztZOlQcccI

Apple/Android Watches

A reminder that these watches are not allowed in school.  There are many reasons for this, with the main one being general data protection regulation or GDPR.  In addition, most of these watches are expensive property.  This does not include basic functional Fitbits.

1:1 i-Pads

If you’ve a child in P6 or P7 you will understand the challenges with keeping a screen time balance.  We allow the i-pads home for equity purposes –to complete tasks, equal access to reading and independent work.  However, as a rule of thumb, parents should create homework parameters i.e. a block of time when these school and research tasks can be completed.  When that time expires, it should go back in the bag.  I’m sure you’ll be able to settle into a family routine successfully soon!

Glass containers

We had an incident last week when a child took out his snack and dropped the container which was made of glass!  Luckily it didn’t break in the busy playground.  Glass is prohibited in school. Please use re-usable Tupperware or other recyclable materials for snack.

Cargo Bike Community Event

Cargo Bike Festive Community Event on Saturday September 23rd, 2-5pm @ Montpelier: Please come by and give cargo bikes a try! Including stalls from Love to Ride, Critical Mass, Dig in, The Bike Station: Dr Bike – Bring your bike for health checks (free of charge), Boroughmuir High School’s Climate Change Society, Kids Arts and Crafts, Face Paining, Chalking area, music and cakes. All welcome, young and old! (organized by BANZAI – Bruntsfield Area Net Zero Action Initiative).

Pupil Council

Our New Pupil Council met on Tuesday.  There was no time for an introductory meeting – we had a very important task to do!  The group worked on ideas for our new vision, values and a motto.  They had some excellent suggestions!  We have now consulted with our 3 most important stakeholders and hopefully will be able to officially announce Bruntsfield’s new vision and values next week.

Meet the Teacher

This was the second year of our event.  We had another bumper turnout!  It was lovely to see everyone in school enjoying time in class and finding out our plans for the year ahead.  Feedback for the event was very positive.  Thank you for being so supportive!

Jewish New Year

We would like to wish all our families in our community from the Jewish faith a Happy Rosh Hashanah on Saturday 16th.  Have a great time!

Edinburgh September Weekend

We will have our annual September long weekend on Monday 18th September.  Schools will be closed on that day.  We will re-open on Tuesday 19th at the usual times.

Kind regards,

Stephen Gilhooley
