Teacher’s Update 07/03/2025

Dear Parents/Carers,

Assembly

Today our theme was all things Eco.  We talked about the climate emergency and some of the things we can do to help our planet.  We celebrated achievements in the usual ways.

Maths Parent Survey

Mr Wood (DHT) has been leading improvements in Maths and Numeracy across Bruntsfield School.  Please take 5 minutes to help him with his research by completing this short online survey: https://forms.office.com/e/TRau3YzVtt

Little Orphan Aggie

What an amazing show we witnessed on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Churchill Theatre!  The 60 children who took to the stage demonstrated all their talent in abundance!  We had laughs, singing, dancing and great acting.  Thanks to all who helped to organise such a great event.  We are very proud of our children performing so well in the community.

Achievements

Congratulations to Jiqing M in P7 for winning first place of the year group and the overall instrumental winner of the Edinburgh Burns Society Competition!  He dazzled the competition and the judges with his piano playing.  We now have two amazing new trophies in the trophy cabinet.

Writing

I have been spending time in classes this week experiencing our writing lessons with our learners.  The skill and application of the learners and the support given by staff has been very good indeed.  Our children have very creative minds.  This showed over the week!

Parent Coffee Morning Workshop (Every Friday at 9am)

Today we had the ‘Looking after yourself as a parent’ workshop led by Janet Kirkwood.

Janet led the workshop brilliantly. The first activity was about ‘The Perfect Parent’ and came to the conclusion that ‘Good’ is good enough! The second activity was ‘Filling up your bucket’ and encouraged parents to think of ways to look after themselves regularly to help that bucket from staying at least a bit full. We had a great wee group.

Next week, Friday 14th March from 9:00-9:45am, the parent drop-in will be ‘Zones of Regulation’ run by Mrs Tait. This is a repeat workshop from December. ‘Zones of Regulation’ is a tool to help people identify and regulate emotions.

We are currently in the process of implementing this tool across the whole school so your children may come home talking about which ‘colour zone’ they are in.

If you’d like to find out more, please do pop into the Nurture Nook next Friday for a cup of tea/coffee and chat.

Looking forward to seeing you then.

Eco Code Competition

Pupils are invited to create a refreshed ‘Eco-Code’ for our school. The format of the Eco-Code is entirely up to pupils. It could be a list of statements, an acrostic, a mascot, a logo, a rap, song or even a poem. It should be memorable and communicate our school’s commitment to environmental improvement. This will be displayed throughout the school and used prominently as we work towards maintaining our Green Flag Award.

  • Submissions to be handed into class teacher by Friday 21st March
  • Each class teacher will pick their top entry and submit to their class Eco Rep or myself by Monday 24th March.
  • The winning entry will be announced at Assembly on Friday 28th March.

Spring Clean Scotland

Spring Clean Scotland is an annual campaign which brings together people from across Scotland to tackle litter. During this month-long campaign, thousands of volunteers spend time outdoors cleaning up the environment through sociable, fun, litter picking sessions. In 2025, it will run between 21 March – 21 April. Pupils are encouraged to go out in their local areas and participate in litter picking. Pupils can share photos to their TEAMS page or to Mr Gilhooley. Why not organise a class trip to litter pick around the Bruntsfield area?

World Book Week – Thursday 6th March 2025

We had such a fun day on Thursday celebrating Book Week!  All classes spent time at the Edinburgh Book Shop, our local book store.  Each child came back with a book of their choice.  Some classes had literacy activities in the links, took part in live video streams and enjoyed lots of exciting activities.  The costumes were amazing!  Thanks to all who took part and helped to produce a costume for their child.

10 Books for A Diverse Bookshelf

Each list offers broad and balanced representation with books centring characters of different ethnicities, cultures, disabilities and family structures.

George Hall – former pupil of Bruntsfield

In our 130th anniversary year, we were very lucky to hear from George Hall who was an ex pupil of Bruntsfield School and Head of The Royal Academy for Music.  We were happy to wish him a happy birthday on the occasion of his 100th birthday!

Here is a link to the second episode in the podcast series George Hall at 100 where Sir Tony Robinson talks to George about his early life in Edinburgh and also reads from the document you sent us about his time at Bruntsfield in the 1930’s.

This is the second of five episode, the first one went up last week and includes some wonderful stories about Sir Laurence Olivier, Leslie Caron and many others George has worked with.

And as well as the conversation with Neil Pearson and Leonie Mellinger it has contributions from Rufus Sewell, Harriet Thorpe, Lindsay Duncan, Christopher Ecclestone, James Purefoy, Peter Chelsom and James Nesbitt. Here is the link to that one.
