Head Teacher’s Update 21/02/2025

Dear Parents/Guardians

Assembly

We had a fantastic treat to begin our Assembly!  3 students from Napier University played 3 classical pieces for us on violins and piano.  We also revisited the Building Resilience Programme and spoke about ‘Having a Go.’  We had time to celebrate International Other Language Day.  We shared our native language with others.

GREEN PENCIL AWARD 2024

Congratulations to Manus O in P6 who was one of the twenty finalists in the Green Pencil Award 2024.  His writing was of a particularly high standard.

His book token Finalist prize will be posted to school.

Bikes in our Shed

Sadly, I had my road bike stolen from our Bike Shed yesterday.  It was locked up, but the steel cable had been cut through. CCTV has picked up the perpetrator and the incident is now in the hands of the Police.  We will be revisiting our security arrangements with the Council over the next week.  In the meantime, we do have quite a few valuable children’s bikes left on our shed over a long period.  If your family owns one of those bikes, could I ask you to remove it and store the bike safely elsewhere.  Thanks.

World Book Day – Thursday 6th March 2025

World Book Day is on THURSDAY 6th MARCH this year. Children can come to school, if they wish dressed as a favourite book character. This year we are also adding in a new idea – children (and staff) could choose to create a storytelling hat or wear a favourite hat, perhaps with extra add-ons for creativity. So, thinking caps on…

All classes will also have the opportunity to visit our lovely, local Edinburgh Bookshop where that can redeem their voucher for one of the specially commissioned free books. Please let your child’s teacher know if you DO NOT want your child to get the free book and would rather have the voucher as a £1 reduction on another title. No monies should be brought to the bookshop – this would be done at another time.

Because of the number of classes we have at Bruntsfield, the visits will take place over 2 days – Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th. Your child’s teacher will let you know which day they will be visiting and the day WBD outfits/ hats are to be worn.

In School…

P4a and the P5s welcomed our parent author Catherine Rayner to their classes this week. Catherine shared her notebooks and some drawing techniques and gave one of her first public readings of her latest book Otto – the Top Dog. All children and staff had a lovely time. Thank you Catherine.

P5a also welcomed their parents in to their class to take part in a reading workshop with Mrs. Foley. It was great to see so many of you engaged in reading and trying out a few new ideas.

Friday Parent Drop in

Next Friday (28th February from 9:00-9:45am) the parent drop-in session in a P6 mingle. This is an opportunity for any parents of P6 pupils to pop into the Nurture Nook, have a cup of tea/coffee and chat together as parents of the same-aged pupils. We hope offering this space will help parents to network and support one another.

Look forward to seeing you then.

 Cheryl Tait (PSO)

Kind regards,

Stephen Gilhooley
