Head Teacher Update 03/02/2025

Dear Parents/Carers,

Assembly

Finally, we got to share our Scots Poetry and song on Friday!  What an event!  We had an amazing time listening to excellent recital, song and instrumental pieces.  Everyone did their very best and the audience were very respectful and welcoming to all the talent.  It was so close to call.

Our overall winners:

  • P5-P7 Quaich goes to Ruaridh C from P7A
  • P5-P7 Golden Haggis winner is Milly M from P7B
  • P1-P4 Winner is Teo PM in P3C

As it was such a tight contest, Eilish W from P6B received an additional award for her excellence in recital.

There had to be winners, but every child deserves a special mention for their effort and courage.  Everyone involved today received a Burns certificate.

Attendance and Latecoming

Our Pupil Support Officer, Mrs Tait has been working with our Admin Staff and Senior Leaders to create a system of communication to highlight the impact of late coming and attendance and the relationship with pupil progress.  Data will be shared in a letter if attendance and latecoming is a concern.  We do realise there might be a back story to some of these, which we will be aware of, but in the spirit of equality, every parent will receive this if their child is under the threshold.  This will ensure transparency across the school community.  This communication will start from next week.

130th Anniversary of Bruntsfield School

We are planning some amazing events to celebrate Bruntsfield School’s 120th year.  Historical studies, dances, drama and music are just some of the ideas so far. If you have any ideas of your own, please let us know!!

The school opened to children on 4th February 1895 by Mr J King who was previously HT of South Morningside.  424 pupils started that day, mainly from Warrender Park, James Gillespies, North Merchiston and Fountainbridge.  The first floor was occupied by Infants and the second floor by Juveniles.  By 17th September 1895, the roll had increased to 1014!  St Oswald’s Church Hall was used as an annex in 1901.

By 1906, the roll was close to 1500 children.  Playtime must have been tricky!!

The format will be just as Any Questions (or Question Time). We have confirmed speakers from Edinburgh Council, as well as from Connect (https://connect.scot/). School Crossing Vacancy

There is a vacancy on the myjobscotland website (www.myjobscotland.gov.uk) for a crossing patrol in our school community.  We need one desperately!!  Please let everyone you know aware of this.

The closing date for the vacancies is the 4th February and the post reference number on myjobscotland is EDN29997.

As a shortcut to the vacancy candidates can either click on the link below or put School Crossing Patrol into the key words box on the website and this will bring up only school crossing vacancies instead of having to scroll through all of the Edinburgh council vacancies.
