Dear Parents/Carers,

Festive Sing a long

We had a lovely end to our term!  We all met in the Stage Hall and each year stage performed one song for all of us to enjoy.  We also had a performance from our violins, cellos and guitar group.  We all went back to class with a spring in our step!

Food parcels

I would like to say a big thank you to all our community who donated food parcels for those families in West Edinburgh who are finding life and supporting their family challenging at this time.  Special thanks to Helen Williams , who works in the area for co-ordinating the delivery.

One of their staff wrote to me and said,

‘What an incredible turn out for the food care parcels. I dropped the last few off this morning and the staff were busy already taking parcels out to the families in their community. It will make a difference to so many families this Christmas. ‘

Achievements and opportunities

P6/5 enjoyed a return visit to Morningside library this week with the P6s having an opportunity to get e-books on their iPads. Members of the public commented on their lovely manners and behaviour. In addition, Matthew in P6/5 received a prize last week at the Scottish Parliament from Daniel Johnson MSP for his Christmas card design.  Well done!

And more achievements…

Eirinnin P6B got a special mention and treats for her class for the Malin Group STEM engineering festive scuplture competition. They loved her tessellated triangle Christmas tree and were impressed with the simple but original design!

All of P6 enjoyed workshops from the UK parliament. Our visitor talked to them about democracy and played interactive games – including who they would nominate to the House of Lords for their expertise!  Our visitor enjoyed teaching our classes about the difference between reserved and devolved matters, the journey of a bill through the House of Commons and Lords and really brought our topic to life.

P6 also have been enjoying getting creative with electrical circuits. We have designed, made games and a mini Central Park! We also wrote instructions and shared our learning with P4 who will be looking at the first level electricity outcomes soon!

International Bake Sale

The whole event was a great success!  We raised a whopping £950 for outdoor equipment and resources.  Many thanks to you all for your delicious baking, Lina and the other parents who supported the children during the morning.  We also enjoyed a wonderful performance from the choir at the end to cap off a great morning.

Message from the Director of Education Lorna French

Dear Parents and Carers

There is no better way to enjoy this time of year than to take part in the traditions which bring our multi-cultural school communities together, giving thanks for what we have, and sharing what we can. If you couldn’t get to anything in school in person, I hope you’ll be reassured to know that our teachers and support workers did all they could to dress the schools and to prepare all sorts of goodies with the children, to display, or sell or give as gifts. Learning takes many forms, and as the world continues to change at a faster and faster pace, holding onto our social traditions is becoming increasingly important.

Whichever traditions are dear to you, I wish you the very best of times with your loved ones.

Warmest regards

Yours sincerely

Lorna French

Service Director Education and Chief Education Officer
