We learned about the K-6 Force who were a group of soldiers from India (Bangladesh and Pakistan at this time were part of greater India) stationed in Scotland during WW2. When we read through some of the accounts which some of the locals from Lairg gave at the time, there was reference to the curries and chapatis which the soldiers would make in the local school cookhouse.
A pupil in our class shared that she made chapatis at home with her mother most weeks and we decided for pancake day we would make savoury chapatis along with sweet pancakes. There was lots of good discussion about the British empire and India’s contribution to the war effort 1939-1945.
