Headteacher’s Update 9/05/2025

Dear Parents/Carers,

Assembly

Today we looked back at our values (Kindness, Equality, Respect, Perseverance and Courage).  We focussed on Perseverance and discussed why that value is important and how it can benefit us all.

Achievements

  • On Sat 28th, we entered a team in the Scottish Cross Country Championships. The P6 girls team got a bronze and the P7 girls team were 4th.  They represented their school so well.
  • On Wednesday, Bruntsfield had a team competing in the Scottish Badminton Championships in Wishaw.  The team almost won! They finished runner up losing the last match 6-5 in a really tight contest.  The children were well behaved, and showed respect to their opponents, a great team effort. They all received runner up medals.

What’s been happening around school?

  • P5a were delighted to welcome our new lollipop lady, Catherine to their class. It seems that their poster campaign was a success! Seeing one of the posters in a local shop, prompted her to apply for the job. With the sunny weather this week the class also took their writing lesson outside, to the Links, where the wrote thank you letters to local businesses for supporting their campaign.
  • P3 have enjoyed learning about dinosaurs. They took part in two workshops with Dinostar museum from Hull this week; investigating dinosaur bones and creating fossils.
  • P1 has been learning all about castles and making some great models!

Coffee morning/drop in

Next Friday (16th May from 9:00-9:45am) the parent drop-in session in a P2 mingle. This is an opportunity for any parents of P2 pupils to pop into the Nurture Nook, have a cup of tea/coffee and chat together as parents of the same-aged pupils. We hope offering this space will help parents to network and support one another.

P4 Show

On Wednesday, we hosted our P4 Parents who got the chance to see the P4 Show.  The acting and singing was superb!  I’m convinced I see a better show every time!  Thanks to all in the P4 Team for all their hard work.

Sports Day

Look out for the messages on your class Teams pages for Sports Day scheduled for next Wednesday 14th.

Summer Fair

The Summer Fair will be on Saturday 31 May, midday till 3pm. We still need plenty of volunteers to ensure the event runs smoothly, so please contact your class rep if you can help.

Weather

Summer seems to be with us a little earlier this year.  Please consider applying sunscreen to your child every sunny morning and ensure they have a filled water bottle.  They should have their school polo shirt underneath the sweatshirt.  If you’re looking for more, please contact the school via the Office or our email address: Family@bruntsfield.edin.sch.uk

Brownies and Beavers

  • The 40th Brownies pack meets every Thursday evening in Holy Corner. Our pack has been active for over 100 years (!) at the same location, and over the years we have welcomed [hundreds] of girls from your school. Girlguiding helps girls and young women find their voice, and build skills and confidence through making a positive difference in their community. In recent years we have explored our local community spaces, learned how to cook, sew, upcycle, run bake sales, sell our pre-loved toys and books, and earn lots of exciting badges!  HOWEVER , we are currently really struggling for numbers at our pack. With diminishing intake, our unit is in danger of closing down soon, which would be a very sad loss for the young girls in our neighbourhood and the community as a whole.

We meet Thursdays 18:15-19:30 at Christchurch Holy Corner. We accept girls ages 7-10yo and especially welcome P2-P4s at present.  Please use this link and select 40th Brownie Unit Edinburgh” to sign up!

  • Typically beavers meet on Fridays, 6-7pm at Barclay Viewforth Chalmers Hall, 1 Wright’s Houses, Edinburgh EH10 4HN. If you are interested in finding out more, joining the team or volunteering regularly to help, we can support you to get your PVG and doing some initial training – just let Fiona know at Barclay.Beavers@100thpentland.org.uk

Kind regards,

Stephen Gilhooley
