Head Teachers Blog 10.2.22

Dear Parents and Carers,

  • Children’s Mental Health Week: We are fully committed to supporting and developing children’s mental health. Our Building Resilience programme repeats every 3 years. Each theme is addressed in Early, First and Second Level. ‘Emotions Talks’ is one of several programmes used for focus groups, and children are encouraged to talk to Teachers,  Pupil Support Assistants and the Leadership Team whenever they wish to do so. Our Pupil Council have organised a ‘Dress Up’ or ‘Dress to Express’ on Friday 11 February to show our support for mental health.

·       February’s Right of the Month is Article 30: “You have the right to practice your own culture, language and religion – or any you choose.  Minority and indigenous groups need special protection of this right.” Children are invited to share what this means for them with their class if they wish.

  • Equalities: Since ourOctober inservice, staff have been working on Diversity and Inclusion. They will share their findings with each other at our next staff meeting in February. Going forward, we shall focus on the Heritage of our pupils in their individual classes. If you have any suggestions on how you could help with this, please let the class teacher know (and copy Ms Dobie and myself in via admin@bruntsfield.edin.sch.uk). This will also be a focus for our P4-P7 Pupil Equalities Group who will share their ideas across all stages of the school.
  • P6A class have had great discussions and submitted their views to the Edinburgh Slavery and Colonisation Legacy Review as part of their learning on UNCRC Article 13. Well done P6A.
  • Photos and Filming: we politely ask you not to take photos or film groups of children in the playground. Parents give, or do not give, permission for photos to be taken of their children whilst at school when they register.  We wish to continue to do all we can to respect their privacy. Your help in helping with this is much appreciated.
  • Parental Involvement and Engagement Census (PIE) 2020/2021. If you would like to complete the census, please do so via https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/edinpie/ (details have been emailed to you).
  • Head Lice: We have been informed our ‘little visitors’ are with us again. It would be great if everyone could do a check over the holiday. Treatments are available, free of charge, from our local pharmacies.
  • Covid Cases: this week we had 5 positive pupil cases on Monday, 4 on Tuesday, 4 on Wednesday and 3 today. 4 classes have 2 or more cases in them and 5 have one case in the class.
  • Facility Technician Positions: If you are interested, or know of anyone who may be interested, in becoming a Facility Technician (previously called janitors), posts are advertised for the following areas: Bruntsfield, Balerno, Burdiehouse, Currie, Frogston, Gilmerton Morningside, Oxgangs and Wester Hailes. The  Facility Management Team are holding a recruitment event on Tuesday 15 February 2022 to share information on the remit of the post. An information poster is on our website and the link to My Job Scotland and links to the publicity on the Council website are below.

Have a lovely February Holiday everyone, look after yourselves and each other, and I look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 21 February.

Carol Kyle
