Head Teacher’s Blog 05/05/2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

School Updates:

  • Consultation on P6 and P7 Start and Finishing Times: We consulted on the start and finish times for P6 and P7. The times for P3, P4 and P5 remain the same. Primary 1 and Primary 2 have a shorter day in school, they have 22.5 hours contact with their classes and the P3 to P7 classes have 25 hours. Please see attached the results of our consultation on the P6 and P7 starting and finishing times. You will see the children favour the 8.30am start, 244 of them chose this time, 67 like 8.35am and 86 like 8.40am. The staff and parents who responded results are as follows:
    • Staff: 7 selected 8.30am, 1 selected 8.35am and 2 selected 8.40am
    • Parents and Carers: 43 selected 8.30am, 5 selected 8.35am, 59 selected 8.40am and 32 did not mind.

Taking all the viewpoints into consideration and being mindful of the benefits of the classes entering the school in a much calmer way, we have produced a proposal which gives something to everyone. Please see attached times and we can discuss at the next Parent Council Meeting. This proposal gives:

  • a shorter time between all the stages starting (20 minutes in place of 30)
  • still allows time for the children to come into school in a much more measured way to allow safe travel to school and entry to the building
  • easy to remember starting times as they are 8.35am, 8.45am and 8.55am in the morning
  • similarly, easy to remember finishing times, 3.00pm, 3.10pm and 3.20pm in the afternoon.
  • Rights Respecting Schools Parent/Carer Volunteer: We have not had a parent/carer come forward to be a rep on our Rights Respecting Team. If you would like to become involved and be our Rights Respecting Schools Parent/Carer Volunteer please let us know. The group is currently made up of pupils from P3 – P7 classes, Mrs Nicol, Miss Doig and Miss S. Dobie. The volunteer needs to be available during the school day to meet with the pupil group. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to find out more, please email admin@bruntsfield.edin.sch.uk (For the attention of Mrs Nicol).
