Dear Parents and Carers

We have had our first week back in school and it has been lovely to see all the staff and children together again.

Thank you for working with us to make this first week back a pleasure.

I hope the following information is of help to you, we shall update you if and when any changes are made.

Keeping the Virus out of our School and the Community:

  • We are all very keen to keep the Virus out of our community in order to keep the school open.
  • Please help us by following all social distancing precautionary measures at drop-off and pick-up times. If you are going to be close to others for 15 minutes or more, please wear face coverings.
  • We ask all drivers to help give space for families during drop-off and pick-up times by parking away from the school.
  • The school office is CLOSED to parents walking in. Please either email admin@bruntsfield.edin.sch.uk or call the office on 0131 229 1821 and the office staff will do all they can to help or direct your call. There will be occasions where it may be of help to meet in person and if so, a time will be arranged.
  • If your child is showing symptoms of Covid-19, please keep them and their siblings off school until a test has been completed. Families who have done this have had results back the following day.
  • If your children are currently at home self-isolating or recovering from illness, there are activities for them to try  on our website. In the Home – Session 2020-2021 section.

Social distancing:

  • The children will be in a class group and will not be able to keep 2m away from each other. Staff are advised to have 2m space from the children, but this will not be possible with the younger children or if a child is injured or upset.  When the children need closer care, staff may wear a face covering.  For pupils with complex needs, where social distancing is not possible, PPE will be worn.
  • The children will stay in their classes and will not mix across a year-group, unless there is a specific reason to.
  • The children will be in different groups when they go to Kidzcare which will be different from their class groups, but they will be in the same group each week to reduce mixing as far as possible.
  • We are unable to start our buddy system for the moment.
  • P1 and P2 classes will very much be involved in planned purposeful play and the resources will be washed at the end of each day. Movement around the classes of older children will be minimised, but there will be opportunities for cooperative learning. The children will have as much time outside as possible, in Zones, to allow them to move around outside.

Bringing things from home:

  • Children may bring items into school, but we advise they are kept to a minimum.
  • They will all be given a pack of resources they need with their names on them, but the children may add their favourite pencils etc to their bag to leave in school.
  • We ask stationary items from home remain in their individual bags in school and do not go back and forward on a daily basis.

Suggested items to bring into school are:

  • Snacks, lunch, water bottle
  • Glasses
  • Personal hygiene items (tissues, face covering, hand sanitiser, sanitary products etc)
  • Items required for after school club/ childminders (e.g. extra snacks)
  • Mobile phone (please switch off during the school day). Let us know if there are any emergencies we should be aware of, which would require contact and we shall be happy to help.
  • Comfort items, such as a favourite book or family photo.

  • The same procedures will be followed as before and are detailed in our handbook.
  • Permission slips, signed by parents are required if medicine is to be given in school. Please contact the school office.
  • Medical packs which are to remain in school, should be sent in with your child, if it is safe to do so. If you wish to hand in the medicine personally, please contact the school office to arrange a time.
  • Parents of children requiring a Health Care Plan will be contacted by a member of staff to do this.

Bike Sheds:

  • Please ensure your children know how to lock their bike in the bike shed. If they cannot, please ask your child to place their bike inside the playground along the railings, as close to the bike shed as possible to be locked by their parent (we do this during bikeabily when we need extra space). We shall monitor this and update as we find a way to make it easier for you.

Enjoy the weekend, look after yourselves and each other, and I look forward to seeing you all next week.

Kindest regards,

Carol Kyle
